The principle role of the Fisheries and Livestock sectors in the development of agriculture-based economy of Bangladesh is very important and promising. It contributes around 8% to national income, which also is 32% of the total agricultural income. About 90% of animal protein in our diet comes from fish and livestock.

This post is another review of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MOFL) of the Government of Bangladesh. The main functions of the MOFL  are to preserve fisheries resources, fulfill the requirement of animal protein through proper management and planned development, increase socioeconomic conditions of fishermen, create employment opportunities for rural unemployed and landless people, expand foreign exchange earnings by exporting fish and fishery products and to innovate new technologies through research for fisheries development and preservation.

  • Preparation of schemes and coordination of national policy in respect of fisheries
  • Prevention and control of fish diseases in the country
  • Utilization of fish and fish wastes and development of fisheries resources and fishing techniques
  • Control, Management and Development of Government Fisheries which are under the development scheme of this Ministry and such other fisheries which will be included in future in the development scheme of the Ministry
  • Fish farms- Management and conservation of fish and other population of aquatic organisms of economic importance
  • Refrigeration and cold storage facilities for fishes
  • Improvement and augmentation of aquaculture and cultivation of pink pearls in Bangladesh
  • All matters relating of Marine Fisheries including permission for acquisition, licensing and monitoring of operation of fishing vessels including Factory Ship in the country
  • Fishing and fisheries beyond territorial waters (including deep-sea fishing), fish harbor, fish quality-testing laboratories and other ancillary organizations
  • Zoological research, zoological gardens and zoological surveys etc
  • Veterinary education (other than Agricultural University) and development of Animal Resources
  • Improvement of cattle wealth
  • Coordination and determination of standards in institutions of higher veterinary education (other than Agriculture University)
  • Prevention and control of animal and poultry related diseases
  • Poultry Management of poultry farm, grading and quality control in Bangladesh
  • Dairies- Management of cattle farm
  • Animal nutrition
  • Duckery-Management of Duckery Farm, grading and quality control
  • Artificial insemination
  • Professions: Veterinary practice
  • Prevention of cruelty to animals
  • Livestock census and cattle insurance
  • Planning Cell- preparation of schemes and coordination in respect of fisheries and livestock’s in the country
  • Research and training in fishery and livestock sectors
  • Mechanized fishery and livestock operations
  • Participation in relevant internal conference, associations, other bodies and implementation of decisions made thereof
  • Administration of B.C.S. (Fisheries)
  • Administration of B.C.S. (Livestock)
  • Feasibility study on establishment of Fisheries and Livestock Farms before allocation of khas lands by Ministry of Land
  • Utilization of coastal land for brackish water shrimp culture
  • Secretariat administration including financial matters
  • Administration and control of subordinate offices and organization under this Ministry
  • Liaison with International Organizations and matters relating world bodies relating to subjects allotted to this Ministry
  • All laws on subject allotted to this Ministry
  • Inquiries and statistics on any of the subjects allotted to this Ministry
  • Fees in respect of any of the subjects allotted to this Ministry excepts fees taken in courts
